Warning: Do not screenshot that private Facebook Messenger chat unless you want the other person to know you did.

Facebook — now Meta — CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced a few new major changes for Facebook Messenger aimed to dramatically increase privacy on the social media platform.

Notifications will soon be sent to someone if you screenshot a disappearing message that's part of a Secret Conversation, due to end-to-end encryption.

Zuckerberg shared the news via Facebook.

"New update for end-to-end encrypted Messenger chats so you get a notification if someone screenshots a disappearing message," Zuckerberg wrote. "We’re also adding GIFs, stickers, and reactions to encrypted chats too."

This means a copy of your chat will exist even if the messages have disappeared in the app, so someone will potentially always have receipts of what you said.

The 37-year-old mogul provided a demonstration on what will appear if you screenshot a message by having a conversation with partner Priscilla Chan.

Chan captured a screenshot of Zuckerberg making a dad joke about a supercomputer, showing how the notification will operate once vanishing messages are enabled.

Facebook users applauded the company's changes, even making a few jokes in the process.

"I really needed this feature in 2009 when I used to drunk message," one person wrote, while another gave their suggestion on what feature the platform should add next: "We need voice note on comment section…"

Facebook Messenger users can now also reply to Messenger DMs by swiping the message or simply touching and holding it to select "Reply."

Facebook introduced disappearing messages in November 2020, on both Messenger and Instagram. The social media giant made the move in part to provide additional protection to users.

I’d like to report him to HR but I’m afraid he’ll delete the picture and message before they have a chance to investigate.

I’d like to take a screenshot of the photo and message but I’m afraid if I do Facebook will notify him that I did it. Will they?

Rick’s answer:  Beverly, some social media sites (Snapchat for example) do indeed notify a chat partner if you take a screenshot, but Messenger does not.

You can take all the screenshots you want and the other user will never know about it.

That being said, if this man simply deletes the offending photo and message on his end that will NOT remove them from your inbox because deleting an Instant Message conversation is a one-way action.

However, if the man were to delete his Facebook account before your company’s HR department has a chance to take a look at the offending items those messages will no longer bear his actual name. It will simply say “Facebook User”, the generic “name” assigned to all accounts that have been deleted.

Bottom line: You can indeed take a screenshot of anything on Facebook without the other person finding out about it. And in this case you probably should (and as quickly as possible just in case the sender decides to delete his account).

Mark Zuckerberg has issued a reminder – and an apparent warning – to users of Facebook Messenger who screenshot their chats.

The Facebook founder and CEO of parent company Meta said in a post on Friday that an update to Messenger would notify users if an image of their chat has been captured by another person.

“New update for end-to-end encrypted Messenger chats so you get a notification if someone screenshots a disappearing message,” Mr Zuckerberg wrote along with a screenshot of a conversation with his wife, Priscilla Chan.

“We’re also adding GIFs, stickers, and reactions to encrypted chats too,” he added.

The announcement follows an update to the widely used Facebook Messenger platform that allows people to set their messages to disappear.

The feature has so far been rolled out in the United States and is expected to be introduced for Facebook users in Europe in the coming weeks, according to USA Today.

Rival messaging platforms already offer options for user messages to disappear, as well as notifications when a conversation has been screen-shot.

That includes Snapchat, while messaging apps such as WhatsApp include end-to-end encryption – another new recent introduction to Facebook.

Reports suggested the move by Facebook was in response to concerns around security, and a wider controversy around online safety and rights to free speech.

“When are you guys adding the dislike button? We need answers...”, wrote one Facebook user in response to Mr Zuckerberg’s post.

“Maybe it can figure out how to feed the hungry or better, heal all the mental illness caused by these platforms, or maybe house the homeless,” an apparent sceptic added of the update to Facebook messenger. “Can it do any of these?”
