Pengertian AustralisFauna australis ialah suatu golongan hewan yang asalnya dari Australia dan berkembang biak pada wilayah tropis. Fauna australis merupakan jenis hewan yang ada di daerah Papua, Pulau Halmahera dan Kepulauan Aru. Fauna tipe australis ini tidak berbeda jauh dengan berbagai fauna yang ada di negara Australia.

Fauna Austrlis tersebar di wilayah Indonesia bagian timur. Indonesia bagian timur dulunya merupakan pecahan dari benua Australia. Fauna Australis tersebar di beberapa wilayah di antaranya,1. Maluku2. Irian Jaya3. dan pulau-pulau Kecil di sekitarnya.

Kanguru PohonDi Papu terdapat 5 jenis Kanguru Pohon, yaitu kanguru pohon nemena (Dendrologus Ursinus), kanguru pohon wakera (Dendrologus Inustus), kanguru pohon mbasio (Dendrologus mbasio), kanguru pohon ndomea (Dendrologus dorianus), dan kanguru pohon hias (Dendrologus goofellow). Kanguru ini hidup di pohon, berbeda dengan kanguru Australia yang hidup di daratan.2. KuskusKuskus merupakan salah satu jenis hewan yang masih berkeluarga dengan hewan berkantung khas Australia. CendrawasihIni merupakan salah satu burung tercantik yang ada di dunia. Bulunya yang berwarna-warni dan juga sangat mencolok dapat menarik perhatian orang yang melihatnya. Di Indonesia terdapat kurang lebih 30 jenis cendrawasih yang tersebar di Kepulauan Maluku dan Papua. Karena keindahan yang dimiliki burung ini, kelestarian burung ini menjadi terancam.4. KasuariKasuari merupakan salah satu keluarga burung raksasa, tinggi burung kasuari dapat mencapai 100-180 cm dengan berat bisa mencapai 60kg. Kasuari memiliki kaki yang kuat dan bisa menggoyangkan sebatang pohon untuk mencari buahnya.Keberadaan burung ini mulai terancam karena perburuan. Banyak pemburu yang ingin memanfaatkan dagingnya dan juga mencari tulang kasuari karena dapat diukir atau dimanfaatkan menjadi senjata tradisional.5. WalabiAda beberapa jenis walabi yang telah punah di Papua karena adanya perburuan liar. Dari banyak jenis walabi yang tersisa, sekarang hanya walabi saham (Macropus agile) yang terdapat di rawa terbuka di Papua.

Kini walabi telah dilindungi oleh pemerintah di daerah perlindungan Taman Nasional Wasur untuk menghindari kepunahan Jika dilihat sekilas, walabi sendiri sebenarnya sangat mirip dengan kanguru.
